Simeone not interested in Clasico outcome

Atletico Madrid can close the gap to Barcelona and Real Madrid this weekend and their coach says he is focusing solely on his team

Diego Simeone says he has "no interest" in the result of the Clasico on Saturday as Atletico Madrid aim to close the gap to La Liga's top two.

Real Madrid host leaders Barcelona looking to draw level on points with the reigning champions, while Atletico will be looking to take advantage of dropped points by either side to make up ground when they take on Real Betis.

Simeone considers the fixtures this weekend to be potentially significant, with Champions League hopefuls Sevilla facing a difficult trip to take on Eusebio Sacristan's Real Sociedad, but his focus is solely on Atleti.

"The truth is I have no interest [in the Clasico]. What interests me is that we play a good game and keep going in the way we have been," he told reporters.

"There are big games in this round. Sevilla are also going to San Sebastian and that's a difficult game, too.

Young people to lose access to unemployment benefits as part of welfare reforms

YOUNG people will not be able to get unemployment benefits until they turn 25 under reforms introduced by the Turnbull Government today. The coalition has unveiled wide-ranging welfare reforms in parliament today, including changes to the Newstart program. It hopes to stop people aged 22 to 24 getting Newstart or the Sickness allowance, and they will instead be shifted to the Youth Allowance payment. This will reduce the amount of money that they will be able to get, costing a single person living away from home about $90 a fortnight. They will also be required to study in order to qualify for the payments. “The key aim of this measure is to provide incentives for young unemployed people to obtain the relevant education and training to increase employability,” according to an explanatory memorandum for the bill.
