The Manchester United forward Anthony Martial left the stadium on crutches after France’s defeat to England, with strapping on the foot and ankle.
Martial played 67 minutes for Les Bleus before being replaced by Antoine Griezmann. He will have a scan on the injury before United’s league game at Watford on Saturday but the France coach, Didier Deschamps, described the problem as just a knock, even though Martial was in some discomfort.
“He was in quite a bit of pain,” said Deschamps. “He got a kick in the penalty area. I think it’s just a knock rather than anything else to the top of his foot.”
On a night when football was of secondary importance Wayne Rooney, the England captain and Martial’s club team-mate, said the occasion and performance of both teams will help display solidarity and unity to the world.
“It was always going to be a difficult night for everyone, especially the French players and staff. For ourselves to be involved in this occasion was tough, the young players were excited but it was a difficult game for them,” said Rooney, who scored England’s second goal.
“I thought both teams handled it extremely well. The fans were brilliant. This will be shown around the world and will show unity. Football is a global game and as Didier Deschamps said yesterday, it is not about religion or race. We need to stand tall together in these tough times.”
