Mamadou Sakho could be sidelined for six to eight weeks with knee
ligament damage but is understood to have escaped a cruciate injury during Liverpool’s defeat by Crystal Palace on Sunday.
The in-form France international landed awkwardly after an aerial challenge on Bakary Sako, prompting the manager Jürgen Klopp to admit he would rather have lost 4-1 than lose the defender for an extended period.
Sakho had a scan on Monday that ruled out a cruciate rupture but requires further consultation with medical specialists before the full extent of the injury and lay-off is determined. The former Paris Saint-Germain
captain will meet a consultant on Tuesday and the 25-year-old is likely to be sidelined for at least six weeks.
The central defender has withdrawn from France’s friendly fixtures against Germany and England and his absence will offer Dejan Lovren the opportunity to claim a regular role in Klopp’s team.
The new Liverpool manager has now lost four first-team players to knee injuries since replacing Brendan Rodgers one month ago, Danny Ings and Joe Gomez to ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments and Daniel Sturridge with a build-up of fluid on the knee.
