Exeter City have suffered from chronic FA Cup failure for almost a decade and it was with a huge sigh of relief that they saw off Didcot Town with some ease at Loop Meadow.
Didcot, from the Southern League Division One South & West and, with Northwich Victoria, the joint lowest-ranked side left in the competition, held League Two Exeter to a goalless first half. But they were breached three times after the interval, with Clinton Morrison, the former Republic of Ireland international, Tom Nichols and Alex Nicholls doing the damage.
At least Didcot had the consolation of a £100,000 windfall from their seven-match run.
Exeter experienced anguish at the same stage last season, when they lost 1-0 at Warrington Town – like Didcot, also from football’s eighth tier and playing in the first-round proper for the first time.
It emphasised Exeter’s woeful record in the competition during the nine years that Paul Tisdale , the longest-serving manager in the Football League, had been in charge at St James Park.
Tisdale had won only two Cup matches, against Stevenage Borough in 2007 and Nuneaton Borough two years later. A defeat to non-league Curzon Ashton in 2008 ranked alongside the Warrington loss.
