Aston Villa’s Jores Okore has praised the reaction of Denmark supporters after he was subjected to a racial slur from a Danish politician on social media.
The 23-year-old defender, who was born in Ivory Coast but moved to Denmark at the age of three, is currently out with a knee injury sustained in March and is therefore not part of the squadpreparing for the second leg of the Euro 2016 playoff against Sweden on Tuesday night.
However, after Okore was pictured modelling the country’s new shirts, Daniel Carlsen, the leader of the far right The Danish Party tweeted: It is unfortunately not just the national team’s shorts which has a new colour .
Asked by another user to explain his comment, Carlsen added: “I do not believe that Africans should represent Denmark’s national team”.
That led to widespread condemnation from supporters, with the Danish FA tweeting a picture of the winger Yussuf Poulsen and the midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, both of whom have mixed heritage. “It’s the talent that counts,” read the message.
